Riders will explore the Back to the River Trail and see not only scenic and historical sites they have always heard about and may have never seen, but also the new cultural attractions emerging around Omaha's new convention center and arena. The Tour d' Omaha bike ride consists of one ride of three distances utilizing the same basic route. The tour specifically consists of 1) Category I is the complete 48 miles of paved road for experienced road riders; 2) Category II is a 24 mile one-way ride for touring riders or riders with mountain/hybrid bikes starting at Ft. Atkinson in Fort Calhoun (with up to 9 miles of gravel depending on conditions); and 3) Category III - is a down and back 12-24 mile ride on pavement for less experienced riders who have not conditioned themselves but would like to participate and elect to choose their own distance utilizing the same route.
For your own safety, all riders are required to wear a helmet and reminded that they must obey all traffic laws. Omaha Police will assist in traffic control at the start of the ride. Ride support will be furnished 0730-1300 hrs.
See such attractions as 1) stately homes along Florence Blvd & near Miller Park; 2) Kountze Park, site of Omaha's Trans-Mississippi Exposition of 1898; 3) John Pershing Memorial; 4) Florence Depot, Florence Mill, and Mormon Bridge; 5) Ft. Atkinson (occupied 1820-1827); 6) Boyer Chute (best for touring-mountain bikes); 7) site of Jean Pierre Cabanne's Fur Trading Post & Fort Lisa; 8) Dodge Park; 9) Levi Carter Park; 10) Hot Shops Art Center (Market North); 11) Heartland of America Park; and 12) Omaha's renowned Old Market. Finish the event by visiting the new Old Market attractions. Update on the Wine and cheese event. All proceeds will help finance Omaha's French Day Festival scheduled for 2003.
Entry fees begin at $20 for adults and $15 for those 18 years old and under. You can register by mail or on-line. Pre-register to guarantee you will have your t-shirt by July 13th and avoid the extra donation.
