Bike Commuter Bill Gains Support in House

MARCH 26, 2002-WASHINGTON, D. C. (BRAIN) U.S. House of Representative members John Baldacci (D-Maine) and Rush Holt (D-New Jersey) recently signed on as the latest co-sponsrs of a bill in the House that would reward bicycle commuters with tax benefits.

House Bill HR 1265, the bicycle commuter act, now has 44 co-sponsors. Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Oregon) introduced the bill last March. It is awaiting decision in the House Ways and Means Subcommittee.

"[Bill HR 1265] simply adds bicycling to other responsible means of commuting-carpool and public transit-that already receive the tax break," wrote Jeffrey Miller, Bicycle Coalition of Maine's executive director in his e-mail newsletter.

The bill would give bike commuters a tax kickback of up to $65 a month.
